Classic- Markha - Valley

One of the most popular treks in Ladakh – it is a perfect combination of beautiful Trans-Himalayan landscape with the Ladakhi villages. There are good chances to spot some high-altitude wildlife as well as experience the life of Nomadic families as they herd their yaks in these big and beautiful valleys.

After couple of days of acclimatisation to high altitude in Leh you will set out to explore the heartland of the central Ladakh Valley. It involves crossing of High Passes and walking on the banks of the Markha River. Kang YatsePeak (6400 mts) can be approached from this route as the base camp in on the plains of Nimaling.

Detailed Itinerary :

Day 01 : Fly Leh to Delhi


Fly Delhi to Leh. At Leh airport our representative will pick you up and drop to your hotel/guest house. This day is just to relax and acclimatize as you directly reach Leh from Delhi which is 3500 mts. In the evening explore the little market of Leh. Overnight in Leh in Guest House/hotel.

Day 02 : Visit of Monasteries Shey – Thiksey – Hemis


On this day, you will go for the sightseen of some ancient monasteries of Leh.

Shey Gompa is about 15 kms from Leh. It used to be the summer palace of the kings of Ladakh. There are lots of Stupas and Gompas built around the palace. Shey palace was built by Deldan Namgyal in the beginning of 17’Th century AD. Main attraction in Shey is the 12m Shakyamuni Buddha statue inside the Dresthang Gompa.

Thiksey Gompa close to Shey is about 17 kms from Leh. The monastery isone of the most beautiful in Ladakh and belongs to the Gelukspa order.

Hemis about 45 kms south of Leh it is one of the most famous and largest monastery in Ladakh. It belongs to the Drukpa order and was founded in the early 17’Th century. The setting is perfect with the monastery cradled in a lovely valley, surrounded by streams and fronted by long Mani walls. Overnight stay at the guest house.

Day 03: Drive Leh - Zingchen & trek to Ganda La Base (4500 mts, 4-5 hrs)


Today we will enter Hemis National Park for the preservation of Snow leopard, baharal, marmot, lynx, arghali (Tibetan Sheep),wolf and other animals. We will climb gradually through a beautiful gorge before reaching the valley leading to the village of Rumbak. Here we will stop at a tented teahouse run by women from village. After a cup of warm tea, we will continue past the house of Yurtsey before reaching campsite at the base of Ganda La. Overnight at Camp.

Day 04 : Trek Ganda La Base –Skiu ( 3400 mts, 6-7 hrs) via Ganda La Pass ( 4900 mts)


From our base, we follow a path along the mountain side, then cross a small valley and follow zig- zag steep path, there after we cross Ganda La Pass. We relax a bit in the Pass and put our prayer flags on the Chorten. Then we continue gradual descent towards Shingo for lunch. After 2 hrs of descent arrive in the valley of Markha and after few hundred meters we will reachSkiu. Overnight at Camp.

Day 05: Trek Skiu – Markha (3700 mts, 6-7 hrs)


The trail to Markha is not too strenuous, rising about 300 mts, crossing the Markha river a couple of times. Markha is a substantial village, complete with a derelict fort on the hillside and a small village monastery. Overnight at camp.

Day 06: Trek Markha Village – Thachungtse (4150 mts, 5-6 hrs)


Morning after breakfast we start trekking to reach Thachungtse via Hankar village. Kang Yatse (6400 mts), a magnificent snow-clad mountain commands the views for the next two days. A popular place to spot herds of blue sheep slide up and down the steep cliffs with incredible agility. Overnight at camp.

Day 07: Trek Thachungtse - Nimaling (4720 mts, 4-5 hrs)


After breakfast, we start trekking to reach Nimaling. Nimaling has a sweeping pasture where thousands of sheep, goats, yaks and graze during the summer months. We will pass several Mani(stones with prayer inscription) walls and suddenly come across a small lake. The view is wonderful from here – both of Kang Yatse, whose bulk gets reflected in the still water of the lake, and the Markha Valley which we are now well above. Overnight at camp.

Day 08: Trek Nimaling - Shang Sumdo (3660 mts,6-7 hrs) via Kongmaru La Pass (5130 mts)


Today we trek to Kongmaru la passes through narrow Gorges. At the top of the pass, we can have view of the Zanskar range and the villages of the Indus valley to the north is excellent. The trail eases out to reach the river bed at Shang Sumdo.Overnight at Camp.

Day 09: Drive Shang Sumdo to Leh


After breakfast get into vehicles to go to Hemis monastery (optional) or continue directly to Leh. Evening at your leisure. Overnight in the hotel. Trip ends.

Day 10: Fly Delhi


As per your flight schedule we drop you to the airport. Fly home with the sweet memories of the trip. Trip concludes.
